Local Indulgence

Today and tomorrow in this region of the Steiermark (Styria) is the "open door". The local Culinary businesses invite the public for guided tours and samplings. We started off at the neighbouring oil press. Kurbiskernöl,, or pumpkin seed oil, is a major industry of Styria but most of the authentic oil is produced by family owned or boutique presses. The pure bottled oil must have an authenticated seal, the number of which is only given in accordance with the yield from the pumpkin seed weight. It is a thick, greenish black oil with a delicious nutty flavour, mostly used as a salad dressing or sprinkled on omelettes or scambled eggs. Next we visited a lovely lady who grows herbs in her beautiful garden and produces herbal teas, oils and body creams and the like. We were the only brave ones there as it poured all day. We ended up in this cosy bar attached to the wine tasting area. A few people turned can up while we were there although I think they were all related to the owners. What I love about these small towns is that everyone is so friendly and walk in and immediately shake hands and greet everyone sitting around the bar. We are going back tomorrow evening for the wine tasting.
