Memories
Some of the younger tenements in Marchmont boast pretty tiled freezes in the stairs almost as beautiful as the ones many of the Glasgow flats retain in their closes.
These freezes continue on top of the white tiled walls to the top landing, and with marble steps throughout, there is a feeling of light inside the stairwell.
I had a walk through childhood memories this morning.
Although a lifetime has intervened, since I lived here as a child, I found myself remembering all our old neighbours and childhood friends who once belonged in these houses and streets.
I was transported back to a simpler less complicated way of life when there were few cars on the road and we children seem to be outside most of the time, playing in the street, skipping, running, playing hide and seek, roller skating, the girls swopping scraps or the boys their football cards.
No television, no iPads, no heated bedrooms, to have us sitting on our own, glued to a television or PC screen. We had to make our own amusement, and looking back we never seemed to be still for a minute. Needless to say I can't remember it ever raining.
Walking these streets this morning there were ghosts at every stairway.
