Heartbreak

This was a minor tragedy today.
Here is a dead female goldfinch lying on our decking, having, I think, flown into the plate glass whilst carrying nesting material. I was walking across the decking with an armful of wiring to fit an extension cable, and noticed what I think might have been her mate singing from the hedge beyond, never noticed her and stepped on her, making her squeak loudly as I crushed her underfoot.
It was just horrible, and I Was extremely upset.
I buried her in the flower bed.
I consoled myself with the thought that she was probably seriously injured, possibly with a broken neck, but am still disconsolate. Such a beautiful little bird.
