Lake Toba
I woke up to this lovely view! The weather could be better but I'm here to relax so it's not preventing me from doing any activities. During the night there was a huge thunder storm with heavy rain beating down on the tin roof. It was deafening.
For lunch I had a local Batak dish called Manuk Napinadar. The Batak Toba are the local people in this region. The dish was a chicken curry which is more like a marinade than a typical curry sauce. It was tangy and spicy, served with rice and mixed vegetables which were slightly sweet.
During the afternoon I sat working on my balcony, enjoying the relaxing setting. Then for dinner I had fish from the lake grilled on a charcoal barbecue. It was so meaty, fresh and moist. Yum! I also tried some Batak wine which was like a port.
As you asked, here's some more facts about Lake Toba...
- The lake was formed by a supervolcano.
- It's the world's largest volcanic lake.
- About 70,000 years ago it was the site of largest known explosive eruption on Earth in the last 25 million years.
- The eruption killed most humans living at the time and therefore had a massive affect on the world's current genetic make up.
- The eruption also led to a volcanic winter. Oops!
