A day to remember
The eighth of May 2015, the seventieth anniversary of Victory in Europe day. I appeared a couple of years too late for it, but I grew up with my parents' stories of the hardship their generation suffered during the war, which was followed by the numbing austerity of the 1950s.
A short ceremony was held in London this afternoon, attended by the Prime Minister and two former party leaders. Other events are taking place locally this weekend, including lighting the civic beacon which last blazed to mark the Queen's silver jubilee in 2012.
It's also a memorable day following yesterday's General Election in the UK, which threw up a remarkable, totally unforeseen result. The political landscape seems set for a complete overhaul.
It was actually worth staying up till gone 5 a.m. to see history in the making.
