Leigh on Sea
Blustery day at Leigh on Sea.
The old town of Leigh on Sea has a distinguished heritage. From humble beginnings Leigh grew into an important port benefitting from busy trade up the Thames to London. The Mayflower docked at Leigh to take on provisions and passengers before its voyage to the new world with the Pilgrim Fathers. Some believe the village is riddled with smugglers' tunnels with stocks of contraband. The fishermen of Leigh are famous for their heroic attempts to rescue British soldiers stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk. Leigh is also famous for its shellfish, there's an array of cockle boats and old cockle sheds. It's lovely. And windy. And wet. And old.
