National Memorial Arboretum
We drove up near to Lichfield today to visit the Staffordshire Regiment Museum, as my Granddad was with the North Staffs Regiment at Gallipoli and I wanted to find out how to do more research. It was really interesting, and all run by volunteers. They had a "Discovery Day" running today about the Battle of Gallipoli (see my blip from last Saturday) and it was well worth the drive. They have built trenches there (all concreted and re-inforced for H&S reasons!) and it really brought it home to us about how life must have been for the soldiers of the First World War.
After the museum we had a brief visit to the National Memorial Arboretum as it's only a few miles from the museum. There were hundreds - or more like thousands - of visitors, so we decided straight away to cut it short and to return on a week day when it will be quieter.
I've posted some "extra" pics as I couldn't make my mind up. That's the trouble now - we used to HAVE to make our minds up.
This shot is at the Armed Forces Memorial. which commemorates the men and women of the forces who have died as a result of conflict or terrorist activities since the end of WW2.
It is a stunning memorial especially in the sunshine. This view is through the door in one of the sculptures (my picture shows it from the back), where a shaft of light falls only at 11 am on the 11th day of the 11th month and illuminates a wreath in the centre of the memorial.
The figure that you can see in the background is a stretcher bearer, and is part of the sculptures which represent loss and sacrifice.
