Thomas Cubitt - Master Builder

I popped into Dorking today and noticed this statue for the 1st time. The plaque reads: "Thomas Cubitt - Master Builder. Born 1788 - Died 1855 at "Denbies", Dorking. " A Great Builder and a Good Man". The statue was donated by Adrian White, CBE of Denbies in May 2000.

Thomas Cubitt was one of the great builders of the nineteenth century. His firm (becoming Holland, Hannen and Cubitt in 1883 ) was one of a new breed of general contractors and he expected his staff to have knowledge of estimating, drawing, business management and managing works on site. As such he was genuinely the forerunner of the modern construction manager. They were taken over by Tamac (subsequently becoming Tarmac Construction) in1976.
