The Old Shop Front
Cavendish Street was once one of the jewels in Keighley’s crown, a shopping street of beautifully constructed Edwardian buildings. Once a very up-market shopping venue, Cavendish Street has followed most of Britain’s High Streets in its gradual decline towards Charity shops, betting shops, pawn shops and the like, but it does still have some stylish hairdressers, a nice café, a great florist, two chic jewellers and a good old fashioned cobbler, all located under its 220 yard (1/8 mile) long ornamental glass canopy. Although the buildings, the shop fronts and the canopy are all now the subject of a preservation order, many of the shop fronts had already been ‘modernised’ prior to the order being issued. The one in this photograph however, the front of the Health Food shop (Offshoot), is totally original, and sadly the only one remaining
