Bagging a Bargain
It may look like a scene from an affluent Steptoe’s yard . . . and in effect that is just what it is. There’s no telling what you might pick up as a real bargain at your local household refuse collection depot.
I am a pretty regular visitor, albeit mainly disposing of garden rubbish, grass cuttings, or prunings from shrubs, although today’s call was to dispose of some carpeting which really had seen better days in the bathroom. Try as we might, getting into the shower, but particularly getting out, saw water dripping onto the carpet. Over time it really was clear it was time to rip it up and probably revert to floor tiles which we had before the carpet.
But the real point of today’s Blip is the things that people don’t actually throw into the skips, and which might be salvaged to find a new home.
Pictures, books, CDs, vinyl records, household ornaments, toys, ornamental fish tanks, gym equipment, garden furniture, household furniture, bicycles. I, like many fellow visitors disposing of household or garden rubbish, cannot resist a look round what’s on offer. I left a set of drinking glasses on one visit, they were on display later the same day on a return visit, and gone the following day.
I did come close to buying a discarded rowing machine on one occasion, but realised that if I were to use it, it would have to be in the garage. And to make space for it, would mean several more trips to the depot!
