Sir Walter enjoys the sun

He may have explored America,  and fought many battles, but  Sir Walter Raleigh stands proudly outside Sherborne Abbey now.
Apparently he built the castle known as Sherborne New Castle in 1594, as "a place to retire from the Court in summertime", as he particularly liked the view over to the Old Castle ruins, which to this day can be seen across the lake.
Sir Walter was a writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer, and a favourite of Elizabeth 1. However, James sent him to the Tower, and he met his grisly end in Westminster in 1618.
Sherborne today was busy with its Thursday market and many families enjoying the quaint streets, shops and the sunshine. We bought a few plants from a stall, and some delicious corn bread for our lunch!
