Drinking at her Majesty's
This rather kitsch piece, that might almost have been by Jeff Koons, is a wrought iron drinking fountain in St Nicholas Street in Bristol. As you can see it features Queen Victoria supported by a pair of cherubs and was installed to commemorate her 40th birthday. It is the sort of quirky urban architectural feature beloved of the Victorians, but which would seem so out of place were anyone to try it today.
It is located on one of the external walls of Bristol's St Nicholas Market, a covered market that sells bric a brac, books, records etc. It also has a very well patronised food hall that hosts a large range of small stalls selling hot food, featuring everything from traditional British sausages to Thai, via Indian, Portugese, Kurdish etc. I keep meaning to blip the food hall but its always packed and I've not managed it yet.
Realising that one of the MonoMonday challenges in April might well be the element water, I was in two minds whether or not to use this shot for today's blip entry. However, as its colour is such a strong feature it did seem a waste to only show it in black and white.
