6th Anniversary
Today we went on an EPIC hike to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary. I think we are starting a new family tradition of hiking for our anniversary.
Last year we hiked the muddy and wet Kalalau Trail in Kauai.
This year, we headed up to Lake 22. The trail was amazing. It started with lots of rocks and mini waterfalls cascading down over the trail. Eventually, it opened up into an Alpine meadow with views of the surrounding mountains. And as it climbed even higher, we encountered the snow. I had been expecting it so I had bought us our first trekking poles for the excursion. I am so glad I did because we wouldn't have been able to complete the hike without them. The trail became just a boot-path through deep snowpack. It was very slippery up and down tiny hills in the trail. The snow pack looked to be 10 feet deep in some places. At the end, the trail dead ends at Lake 22 because the snow hasn't melted and you simply can't go farther without equipment. The lake was partially iced over and completely ringed in my tall cliffs of mountains. There were avalanches coming down off the cliffs! (At a safe distance from us, across the lake.) You'd hear a crack and a strange noise and could watch the snow tumbling down. We ate a picnic lunch on the bridge overlooking the lake before heading back through the snow. All in all, it was an amazing hike and this trail kind of spoiled us for all other "boring" trails! It was a great way to celebrate our anniversary. In the evening, we went to dinner at Tilth.
