R.I.P bumblebee

We've all seen them, worn-out bumblebees barely dragging themselves along the payment, totally at the mercy of passing birds, or even worse, an unheeding foot.
I found this little creature doing just that as I went to post a letter this afternoon. Barely clinging to life, it managed somehow to cling on to my glove as I scuttled back home.
Popping it in a box, I tried to tempt it with weak solutions of honey or sugar, but it wasn't having any.
Back on the glove and out to the mahonia flowers by the front door. It clung on, and buried its face in a bloom, but then its feeble movements stopped altogether.
Just then a strong gust of wind rocked the mahonia, and it was gone. I searched amongst the fallen leaves at the foot of the plant, but couldn't find it.
Well, I tried. Then, can you believe it, I briefly cried. # daft old bat.
Did I ever mention I really like bumblebees ?
