Low (extremely low) tide at Utah Beach, Normandy
Utah Beach during spring tides: the sea has receded a considerable distance beyond the lowest point of the oyster beds, which are being tended on foot and by tractor.
I would guess that the sea here is at least 800 metres from the sand dunes. Its roar is audible from the dunes but a sea mist ensures that it is barely visible to the human eye.
The tidal reach here is considerable. At high tide the oysters are well covered by the sea water; the two tall poles are the indicators of the location of oyster beds when covered by water, as a boat dropping anchor over one of them would be a disaster for the oyster farmers.
Another view of the beach and its oyster beds.
