An Anachronism.

I planned this as today’s blip when I drove past it yesterday on my way north, it is at the foot of Garrowby Hill, a few miles to the east of Stamford Bridge.

The AA boxes, first introduced in 1911, were built as protection from the elements for the pedal-cycle mounted patrol-men but, as of 2002, only 21 of them remained in Britain, preserved under their “protected building” status. By the 1920s, they were equipped with fire extinguishers, maps and telephones and AA members were provided with keys to them, as we were when we first joined the organisation nearly 30 years ago, ours was never used.

The boxes have now been superseded by the mobile phone and the improved reliability of the modern motor car.
