Nike

Today our WEA literature class had an outing to the Hancock museum in Newcastle where the curator gave us a tour and talk on the Greek artefacts there to complement our study of Homer, Plato and Ovid.

This blip shows Nike, goddess of victory, on the pot. (The trainer manufacturer knew that!). She is often shown crowning successful athletes with a garland, but is also associated with military victory and is portrayed on coins and monuments, celebrating a successful campaign. The picture on the right is a monument to the Boer war, spotted on my way back to the bus station.
