Athen Day Three
Up early this morning with the intension to go for a long walk & within 15 minutes we came to the Presidential Palace just as the Evezone were doing their hourly sentry change, which is carried out in slow motion, that some say is to allow the troops circulation to resume after standing absolutely motionless.
Each solider mounts guard for one hour at a stretch, 3 times every 48 hours. They work in pairs in order to perfect the coordination of their movements.
The main parts of the uniform in this photo are as follows
The hat made of red baize with silk tassel, the shirt white with very wide sleeves, the waistcoat hand embroidered with various designs, the kilt (foustanella) made from 30 meters of white material with 400 pleats representing the 400 years of the Turkish occupation, white woollen stockings with black garters.
The leather clogs (tsarouchi) with black pompoms weighs 1,5 kilogram and has sixty nails studded into the soles so they don’t slip
Our third day in Athens and loving every minute of it, and looking forward to many more fascinating experiences.
What will we find next.
