Athens Day Two
The first site i saw when i got up this morning was the temple of Zeus so i thought this would be the first on my list to visit.
The Temple of Olympian Zeus, also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, is a colossal ruined temple in the centre of the Greek capital Athens that was dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods.
The building of the Temple of Olympian Zeus actually began in the 6th Century
Originally there were 104 Corinthian columns of which only 15 remain standing. One of the columns actually blew down in a storm in 1852 and was left where it fell.
The columns, of Pentelic marble, have a diameter of two meters.
If you ever get the chance to go to Athens this is one of the sites not to be missed and as i can clearly see this scene from my balcony it will be etched on my mind forever.
