Marsaxlokk
The Maltese language uses the letters k, q and x in the most unusual combinations and in ways which are apparently unpronounceable. The matter is rendered easier by the fact that the letters are frequently ignored in speech.
This village's name is one of the more straightforward and is pronounced "Marsashlock"
This attractive fishing village is set around an azure bay in the south-east corner of Malta, and is home, not just to a large fishing fleet, but also a boat-building and repair yard.
These traditional, brightly-painted boats - "Luzzus", are said to owe their design to the ancient Phoenicians, who first arrived in Malta around 800BC.
The Eye of Osiris, the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead, and an ancient symbol of protection against evil, is still painted on just about every prow. They can look quite sinister at times!
