North Carolina Historical Marker

This historical marker sits on the state's boundary line with South Carolina, two miles from our house.  The other side of the sign has information about SC.  Carolina as a territory before division was named for Charles I, king of England.  Except for 1 - 2 year stays in 4 other states, I've spent my life in North Carolina.  The state is know as the Tar Heel state, and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, uses Tar Heels as a name for their athletic teams.   Folk lore says Tar Heels might have come from the Civil War when troops from NC were known to hold their positions as if they had tar on their heels.  Also, much folklore says the name's roots come from the fact that tar, pitch, and turpentine created from the vast pine forests were some of North Carolina's most important exports early in the state's history.   The song that goes with it says, "I'm a Tar Heel born, and a Tar Heel bred, and when I die, I'll be a Tar Heel dead."  Guess that sums it up.
