Velvet Shank

Flam ulna velutipes. Velvet shank is a stump rotting Fungus which also occurs on standing dead wood.
It is able to withstand frost and snow and can therefore be found in good condition from Autumn right through to March.

It is widespread in Britain, mainland Europe, North Africa, Asia and North America.

I was delighted to find it by a footpath at the edge of the village.
