Christmas is a little late.
Schlumbergera, or Christmas Cactus came originally from the coastal mountains of South East Brazil. There it grows in profusion on trees and rock faces. The plant was originally introduced into Europe around 1820 but the popular house plant comes from a hybrid first recorded in 1852.
Millions are grown for sale each year, it's popularity arising from the fact that it flowers for Thanksgiving in America and for Chritmas in Europe.
The plant has no leaves but it's stems flatten into leaf like structures from which the flowers emerge. It prefers a shady position and the compost should be kept just damp all year round. It also benefits from a fine spray especially in centrally heated houses.
