Wound up in Wexford

Broken man sculpture

We had a lovely meal of tapas last night at La Chata and then walked off to try to find an ice cream for dessert, and stumbled on Mercado de San Miguel.  This market was full of an enormous variety of food stalls, selling all types of food and drink.  There was even a couple of chaps pushing trolleys around - one with drinks and the other with pizzas.  We found an ice cream stall and soaked up the vibrant atmosphere.

This morning I dragged Walter on the Teleferico, and we walked around the Casa de Campo for a while, before returning to the main city.

I wanted to see the Temple of Debod, so we found our way there.  As we were leaving, we passed this sculpture on the wall of sandbags.  There was an inscription in Spanish in the ground below it, but nothing to explain it.

We made our way back, past the Royal Palace and the Cathedral, arriving a little footsore at the hotel.

Having not taken the trouble to note down the inscription, I decided to try to find a little more information about the sculpture and the meaning of the inscription.  I had considerable difficulty.  I could find nothing in official Madrid online guides, and just found various references in people's blogs to a civil war monument.  I find the lack of information interesting.  Apparently, the temple of Debod was re-assembled on the site of a previous barracks, stormed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War.
