Lest We Forget

This is a picture of a sign that the Artillery Reserve brings to every reenactment that they attend.  It lists the names of artillery reenactors who have passed away.  On Sundays at the flag raising formation, all of the names are read and taps is played for all of them.  Every member of the Artillery Reserve knows at least one person on the board, as the names come from different units.  Every deceased Artillery Reserve member also gets the camp named after them for one reenactment, and a plaque hangs below this sign with their name on it.  The board has become almost a sacred ritual for us at every event and it rests at the bottom of the flagpole that graces our camp.  On the board are the names of Jack and Sharon Davis.  Jack was the Captain of the battery when I joined five years ago.  At that time his wife, Sharon, was in poor health and Jack passed command of the battery off to Captain Dennis.  Dennis’ first general order as Captain was to promote Jack to Major so that he could continue to come to events.  It was not long after that when Sharon died.  Jack followed about a year later.  Their names were placed on the board next to each other, and our 10lb. Parrot Rifle was named “Jack” in his honor.
