What was it ?

Sambucus Black Lace. Purchased about 20 years ago and kept in a pot for the first few years. It was about 2 ft high when planted in the border then when my back was turned it shot up to 12 ft. Last year it got a 'remedial' pruning as all the foliage was at the top. CH spent two hours yesterday with spade, fork and axe and finally dug out this magnificent root ball. It has been lovely but seemed to reach a natural end
The weather was fine this afternoon and I got lots of weeding and cutting back done whilst CH made further investigations with our 'water feature'.
