Orrest Head

Today's the day ..................... to be at peace

'........ quite suddenly, we emerged from the shadows of the trees and were on a bare headland, and, as though a curtain had dramatically been torn aside, beheld a truly magnificent view.  This was truth.  God was in heaven that day and I a humble worshipper.  Those few hours on Orrest Head cast a spell that changed my life'.

So reads Alfred Wainwright's description of this view - his first of the Lakeland mountains.  In 1930, at the age of 23, he had taken a week's holiday, fellwalking in the Lake District with a cousin, Eric Beardsall.  It was to be the start of a love affair with the Lake District which was to last for the rest of his life.

And I have to say it felt pretty good to be up there today, in the late afternoon looking down over Lake Windermere.  I had the view all to myself too - not a soul about to disturb the peace .......................
