tempus fugit

I’m looking at the BBC News on my laptop.  My “I don’t believe it …” rings out rather louder than I’d intended, because Anniemay comes rushing in to see what latest calamity had befallen me.  “Now I know I’m really getting old”.

I point to the article; Elly May Clampett has just passed away, aged 82“What - the little girl…?”.  “Well - young girl…”  She was actually 30 when she landed the part in The Beverly Hillbillies, but that’s besides the point.  I mean - 82!

I’d been to the GP earlier this morning.  My cough (or rather, our cough) has got worse and is now having side effects.  He checks my chest and throat and then gives me these pills.  I don’t like taking pills for something like this but he says “three weeks is long enough to be dealing with this on your own, especially at ….”  the unuttered ‘your age’ left hanging.

The final reminder that time is passing rather more quickly than I’d like comes in the form of a letter from a life insurance company.  A Term Assurance policy that I’d taken out ages ago has recently expired.  The insurance company invites me to telephone them at my earliest convenience to discuss their offer to extend the life of the policy.  It’s quite a good deal and so I give them a call.  It takes just a few seconds for them to review my recent history and quietly withdraw their offer.  Another “I don’t believe it ..”  I’m too old for life insurance.

Today’s title is a Latin phrase which refers to the passage of time; the full translation is as follows;

time flies like an arrow
fruit flies like a banana
