Walk around town

I always do my annual walk around town on New Year's Day. I was dismayed to see quite a number of shops were open. It used to feel nice to walk around the city centre empty of shoppers. Its in the last couple of years some extra shops are joining the January 1st regular openers.
At least, these units were not open, though maybe later on?
