Hobbit humbug

Went to see the last Hobbit movie, with the kid and Rachel. I'll preface this by saying they really enjoyed it, so if you don't have the issues I have with it you'll be fine.

My issues are all to do with this bloody 3D HFR technology that Peter Jackson is pushing, I've gone to see every one of these movies in this format, and each one has had mostly the same batch of issues.

The high frame rate makes everything seem speeded up, the ultra high pixel count means you can see the plywood, the polystyrene, the fibre glass and the clumps of make up. Most unforgivably, though, for someone at the pinnacle of the visual industries, there are still blown highlights everywhere.

Even Rachel, who enjoyed it, said it looked like a TV movie. Very definitely had that soap opera effect. My suspicion is that the tech will get better, but I feel that by adding more pixels and frames, you leave the brain with less to fill in. The fantasy is killed. I want to be in the fantasy, not on the set.

Anyway, rant over. The plus side is,that I have the bluray 3D versions of them at home and I love them. So I know that when it comes out on bluray, I'll be able to enjoy it.

This image is simply  the ceiling of our local cinema. I like the shape.
