Scarp

Scarp is an island off the northwest coast of Harris, which was abandoned in 1971. Although it lies close to the hamlet of Huishinish in Harris (from where this pic was taken), crossing the Sound of Scarp is always a hazardous affair.

The island of Scarp has its place in history. In 1934, Gerhard Zucker tried to send the island's mail to Harris by rocket - which unfortunately exploded. In the 1950s, twins to an island mum were born in two differen counties. The first child was born in Inverness-shire (what Scarp used to be part of), the second was born in Ross-shire, because the mother was transferred to Stornoway.
