Wishbone Trash
During my many visits to Omagh, Northern Ireland, over the past decade, I've passed this plinth topped by what looks like a wishbone, placed between the shell of a heavily-barricaded Troubles-era police station and a children's play area.
This trip, I asked several journalists at the paper I'm visiting, Is that thing really a wishbone and if so, what's it for?
Ah, the response, Yes, it's a wishbone. What's it commemorating? Nothing, the council erected a few statues around town years ago when they had spare cash.
Tonight I found a council worker in the park next to the memorial and, thinking I might get a more detailed answer, asked him what it was for. Ah, he lifted his cap and scratched his head, I didn't realise there was a statue there . . . never noticed it before!"
So, it now has a name, Wishbone Trash . . . if it was smaller, I'd knock it down and put it in my suitcase; don't think anyone would notice.
