Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

My very own black hole.

This is the black hole into which my pension is disappearing. Every morning I fill up the bird feeder with seed and every morning this rook turns up and fills up his stomach before cramming the same amount again into the capacious and flexible gular pouch beneath his beak. Once the pouch is full he flies off to feed the contents to his mate who is sitting in a tree incubating their eggs. He will soon be back for a refill; little wonder that the scientific name for a rook is Corvus frugilegus, the Latin for the "food-gathering crow"!
