Vartry Reservoir

Today I had to travel to the village of Roundwood where the locals claim to be living in the highest village in Ireland. Like all things Irish you can never be too sure about such claims. I seem to recall another place in Kerry down in the South West which claims the same honour.
Vartry is an area just outside Roundwood and it was here in 1862 that work began on providing a huge reservoir of water, mainly to serve the City of Dublin and holding 11.3 million litres of water. The maximum depth of this man made lake is 18.3 metres or 55 feet. A second reservoir was added in 1923 holding a further 5.6 million litres.
In order to shoot this I had stopped the car half way across the top of the containing dam and the tower you see is known as a Draw Off Tower where water is pumped via a pipe, through the dam and into the water treatment plant the width of the roadway behind me.

Ps. I didn't even notice the two cormorants until after I fired the shutter!
