Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

500, not out.

For my 500th blip yet another aspect of the Buchan landscape that I enjoy so much, on yet another wet and soggy day.

JC Milne describes the area perfectly and economically in Buchan, his 4-line poem written in the Doric dialect.

Buchan

Buchan - a land o'plenty,
Peat-bogs and puddock-steels,
Weet and clorty widder,
And contermashious deils!

Buchan - a land of plenty,
Peat-bogs and toadstools,
Wet and muddy weather,
And contrary devils!

A writer of farming stock, John C Milne (1897-1962) was born at Memsie near Fraserburgh. After a brilliant academic career at Aberdeen University, he turned to teaching, later becoming Master of Method at Aberdeen College of Education. His verse collection, The Orra Loon, was published in 1946 and his Collected Poems in 1963.
