Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Trouble brewing up North?

This enigmatic sign has appeared on the harbour wall at Gardenstown on the north coast of Aberdeenshire. What does it mean? Is a war imminent? Should we keep calm and carry on?

Originally known as Gamrie, Gardenstown was founded in 1720 by Alexander Garden specifically as a fishing village clinging to the base of the steep cliffs above Gamrie Bay.

The village achieved a degree of national fame when, in May 2007, a TV series titled The Baron was filmed in and around the village. The series featured three celebrities, Malcolm McLaren (manager of the Sex Pistols), Mike Reid (comedian and character actor) and Suzanne Shaw (actress and singer) who competed for the vacant hereditary title of "Baron of Troup". During the filming, McLaren was thrown out of the village for unruly and ungodly behaviour, leaving Reid and Shaw to contest the final election, Reid emerging victorious.
