Tandem TLC
The poor old tandem was definitely in need of some repair and maintenance.
Apart from superficial dirt and grime, the brakes sounded like a grinder, the gear shifters needed several pushes and a bit of a twist to change gear and the chains were a sad brown colour and a bit stiff. Last trip out the paper thin rear tyre punctured.
So I ordered lots of stuff on line - most bike shops haven't seen a tandem let alone got any spares for them - and spent three wet days in the garage tarting it up.
New tyres, recycled gear shifters - off the gov's mountain bike at last year's overhaul - new chains, lots of cleaning, new mudguards and I'd hoped to fit a new freewheel to complement the replacement front chain ring but I failed dismally at getting the old freewheel off and succeeded in breaking a Campag freewheel remover belonging to a friend of Evil Goat in the process. So it was clean and polish the old one and on close examination it didn't look particularly worn.
It all looks quite tasty now - better get riding it!
