The Wren

Dejected

This old bench seems to have shrunk into the ground while moss, wild raspberry canes, nettles and other weeds are gradually taking hold in a carefree manner and calling it home. I pass by it frequently and only stopped to have a close look today as the sun was shining on the metal bars forming the seat and it looked quite forlorn. I have actually sat on it many times over the years, probably just to fix a boot lace as the view has been long gone! I wonder how many folk enjoyed sitting here to soak up the ambiance when it was in its prime! However I don't think they would have tarried long as it doesn't look very comfortable and I expect on cold days it would feel very unforgiving.

Where the view over the wide valley used to be, closely planted conifers have grown taller and taller, stretching further and further into the sky in search of daylight. Even when their turn comes to be felled, this old bench will have gone beyond the point of redemption - in truth that stage has already come with the rust contrasting poignantly with the fresh green growth now taking possession.

Bruce is looking very dapper now as he has just had his winter coat clipped. He is going to stay down south with my daughter and family in a couple of weeks time, while I am away on holiday, and I thought he ought to look his best.
