Wild coastline

Present day ships stay well away from the Taranaki coast to avoid the hazardous Cape Egmont and many sunken reefs that lie beneath the waves. The wreck of the SS Gairloch sits broken on the Timaru Reef and serves as a good reminder of the dangers.
