Ulan Ude

Spent election day on a train to Ulan Ude, the capital of Buryatia, only a couple of hours from Mongolia and not far from China. Though statues of Lenin still dominate the central square, its ice sculptures are dragons, mermaids and temples.

And the Christmas tree (or for Russians, the New Year tree) still stands in early March...
