The Atomium

This is described as an unavoidable icon of Brussels and Belgium. It symbolises an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times, referring to the power of nuclear energy in full development at that time (the 1950s) which was intended for peaceful use.

Anyhoo, we first visited it here and decided to go back today and go in it as it has been a very miserable wet old day here in Brussels. It's really quite interesting inside and you can visit five of the nine spheres. We also visited the Planetarium where we watched a short film about the violent universe which was a little scary when you think about the Earth being hit by a meteorite. Dad said he enjoyed it despite us spying him having a snooze!
