Bunnies and Boats

The local wild rabbits like our unkempt back garden, and this morning we had three munching away happily there. I managed to capture (and then crop) one reasonable shot -- with their constant lookout for predators, these rabbits are not easy subjects!

We went down to Squalicum Harbor this morning for the grand opening of the new T.D. Curran Apple store there, and enjoyed looking at all of the technological wizardry. Then we went over to the marina area, where a major clean-up was underway after a dreadful fire there yesterday morning, in which two people died and a number of large pleasure boats and their boathouses were destroyed.

Phil wanted to get closer to the clean-up operation; I headed in the opposite direction, toward the area where commercial fishing vessels are moored. The overcast day reflected the somber mood of everyone at the harbor, and floral tributes multiplied at an impromptu memorial for the couple who perished.

It was ironic that we ate lunch at a Boundary Bay Brewery table overlooked by one of Lorna Libert's larger-than-life paintings, this time of a boat seeing happier times than the ones we'd just left. As we clicked our glasses of Belgian Trippel and Barrel-Aged Oatmeal Stout, "Cheers!" had a deeper meaning than usual.
