Angkor Wat

Up early, had breakfast then went out to find a tuk tuk We got a man with the great name of Mr Hen who we ended up going with every day. Once we agreed a fare we took off and drove to Angkor Wat.
Angkor Wat is the biggest religious structure in the world and was built in the early 12th century. I didn't take a picture of the view from the front as there's some restructuring work going on at the moment and the central tower had some scaffolding on it. This is a view of the South corridor.
It's funny - Angkor Wat is the most famous of all Cambodia's temples and was the thing that made me want to visit Cambodia, yet I have to admit I wasn't so taken with it. The carving and architecture is amazing and the sheer scale of the site is impressive, but I suppose I've maybe just seen too many pictures of it.
We wandered round for about 3 hrs then decided it was time to get out of the baking sun, so went back to meet Mr Hen and drove back to the hotel.

Tuk Tuks are an amazing form of transport, so cool and airy and you get to experience more sights, smells, sounds (and dust!) than you would in a car or mini bus. Not sure they would work on the heavily polluted roads in the UK, but in a hot dry country they are perfect!
Spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool, then went out for dinner in the evening. We walked through central Siem Reap, so we could see a bit of the town - it's a mixture of shops, houses and food stands and felt very very foreign in the dark!
Got to our destination Dead Fish tower a very weird restaurant made of rickety platforms, various types of seating and a crocodile pit on the way to the toilets! I felt tired and a bit culture shocked - am pretty well travelled but was beginning to think we'd maybe bitten off more than we could chew this time, however the food was delicious, cheap and filling and the staff were lovely.
We negotiated our way back up the street to the hotel, had a few cocktails in the bar then up to our room. Day one done without meeting any snakes, scary beasties or landmines!
