Mid Calder Bridge

Erected in 1794 this seven arched, stone built bridge carries the traffic over the Linhouse Water between the villages of East and Mid Calder. It led up to the Raw Turnpike toll house on the road to and from Edinburgh. It was a great benefit to the coaches that previously had to cross the ford further down stream giving the horses a difficult slope down, across the water, then up again into the village.

In Scotland we call a large stream a 'Water' as it is not big enough to be called a
' River' but too large for a ' Burn.'
