Between fen and mountains

I will not claim to have taken this shot for it is a photo of a photo. Having done a bit of work this morning (wonderful that modern technology allows me to run the office from any location I choose), I wandered down to the tourist office where there is a small photographic exhibition. The photos were not great and mounted behind highly reflective glass which meant all I got was a series of SPs. This one I quite liked. I am currently trying to decide on which camera to choose and went to inspect this collection to see what I could aspire to. I learned the basics on my father's old Kodak Retinette which I used for many years. I had an early Finepix digital but have only used point and shoot or the iPhone since. I have to decide on whether to get a high spec bridge camera such as the Panasonic FZ150 or a DLSR such as a Canon EOS 1100D or 550D. I would go for the versatility of the bridge camera for lugging around the mountains and for the zoom if I was sure that I would not compromise picture quality too much and that I would not 'grow out of it.' More research and advice needed I feel.
