Lathyrus Odoratus

Lenten lily

Having spent much of yesterday looking at highly cultivated narcissi I set off this morning to look for the wild daffodil (or Lenten Lily) Narcissus pseudonarcissus which grows in a couple of places on the reserve. It has pale yellow flowers with a darker yellow trumpet. The flower stems are much smaller than the cultivated varieties, reaching no more than three or four inches high and the leaves also tend to be paler and very narrow. While I was lying down taking photographs of these a large grass snake crawled over my legs. I don't mind snakes but I prefer them at a distance. On the same walk I also saw two female adders basking in the sun.
