The nest of a solitary wasp

Packing for the holiday today;

'Has anybody seen the wetsuits?'
'Yes, I think they are in the loft'
'OK, yes I've found them....but wait!
Whats this extraordinary thing hanging from the rafters?

Its a solitary wasp nest from last year, empty now. Its construction is amazing - it looks knitted. It is as big as a snooker/pool ball, is hanging there by a single thread-like attachment, and seems to have a lid on it. Its a work of art. I might take it down tomorrow and cut it open to see what its like inside. I'll show you......
