AAAAAAAAARGH!!! What is it ????

Trimming the long bits off of our Privet hedge this morning, ( Only using the Secaturs, so not too heavy!!) when I discovered this monster eating its way up a long stem. It demolished a leaf in about 2 minutes, so I think it must be having a last good nosh before going through the miracle of Pupation. I expect it will stay dormant now until next Spring.
In German it is a Linguste Schwarmer, what is it in English ?
Used the Macro again, was about 15 cm (6ins) away, ain't Science wonerful !!??
