Bad bee-haviour

I returned to the uprooted beech tree in the forest this morning because yesterday I discovered a colony of tunnelling bees in amongst the moss and roots. If you look at yesterdays blip you'll see the situation. The early morning sun was landing on the mossy crest of the root, and as the temperature rose I watched the 1cm long bees emerge from their tunnels. The first thing they did was stay motionless for a minute or two to warm up, then they walked around their patch for a while. This led to a lot of encounters with their neighbours who were all busy doing the same thing. One of three things happened; they either ignored each other, mated with each other, or had a big bust up. I happily snapped away during all this, choosing an action shot of one of the fights for todays blip (though I could have used numerous other images). It got even better when a second, larger species, emerged from its slumber and started laying into the smaller ones.
I must go back to this spot throughout the summer to see what else I can find.
Spring is arriving, yay!
