Music Non Stop
16s, 78s, 8 Track, 45s, 33&1/3rd, Cassettes, Reel to Reel, CD, DAT, Minidisc, mp3, Downloads.
The many different formats that have stored our favourite songs over the years. The first 3 were before my time but the rest, I know very well.
I liked the feel and the smell of my vinyl collection I'm still talking records here! ;)
But they were prone to damage, even if you were careful when handling them.
So CDs were a welcome, if somewhat expensive addition to music collectors, because they could withstand knocks and bumps and the odd scratch or three but they weren't indestructible as proclaimed.
DAT or digital audio tape to give it it's full title, is I believe still used by the BBC but sadly not by me. No I missed the boat on that one as it was quickly superseded by the new kid on the block, the minidisc.
Now I know there have been further advances since it's arrival but for me I find this format very appealing.
It's small,
Blank discs are inexpensive,
One disc can store up to 10hrs of music,
The sound quality is amazing, when combined with a great set of headphones and these were among the best you could buy.
Used by musicians, in studios up and down the country, the sound through them was excellent.
They dwarf the minidisc but it still packs a mighty big punch itself. It has some great features but alas it doesn't make toast!
Oh well, you can't have it all, but there's no harm in trying
